Otto Scooter: 500+ rental mopeds and e-bikes on Moon
Otto Scooter Ltd rents mopeds and e-bikes in London under the Moonfleets and Moon Bike Rentals brands. Over 500 of their vehicles are tracked on Moon, and they moved onto the current stack in 2026.
The operation
A rental fleet of this kind is not a fleet that goes out in the morning and comes back at night. The vehicles live with customers, sometimes for months, across a city, and the operator's day is made of questions about where a specific vehicle is and who has it. Add e-bikes to mopeds and you get two very different vehicles with the same operational problem: they are easy to move, easy to take indoors, and worth stealing.
Getting a vehicle back
The situation every rental operator knows is the rental that has stopped being paid and the customer who has stopped answering. Two things make it solvable: knowing where the vehicle is standing, and being able to stop it being ridden away again. Otto use the live map for the first and the remote engine immobiliser for the second, on the hardware fitted for it. The vehicle is not taken by force; it stays where it is until the account is settled and the engine is released.
The detail worth copying
The immobiliser is the feature people ask for first and think about least. On Moon it is gated by role: only operators and admins of the company that owns the vehicle can send it, not every user with a login. Every attempt goes into the command history with who sent it, when, and what the device replied — so an action that could end up in a dispute has a record behind it rather than someone's memory.
One group, several companies
The group is not a single company, and the platform does not pretend otherwise. Moon's sub-company hierarchy gives each company in the group its own account, seeing only its own vehicles and its own users, while the parent keeps the whole fleet in one view. Nobody has to be trusted to apply a filter correctly, and nobody has to run a separate platform account per brand.
Commands that arrive later
Not every tracker is online when you need it. Some report on a cycle and are unreachable in between, which is normal behaviour and not a fault. Otto use SMS commands through the SIM platform for those cases: the command goes out over the network the device can still be reached on, and the history shows what was sent and what came back, so an unanswered command is visibly unanswered instead of quietly lost.
Running something similar?
Moped and scooter rental is the fleet Moon was built around, and e-bike fleets share most of the same problems. Both pages set out what the platform does about them, and the price is the same either way: £19.99 per vehicle per year, in packs of 10 licences.
